The Method

Progress you can point at

Most dancers can’t tell you what they’re actually working on. Nobody ever drew them a map, and I spent about twenty years drawing my own badly before it worked on anybody but me. The ZoukNerds Method is that map: seven stages, and each one has a thing you can either do or you can’t do yet.

Biomechanics, not pattern collection

I’ve met dancers who know two hundred moves and still can’t get through one song with a stranger, and I’ve met dancers who know twenty and can dance with anyone in the room. What separates them is whether the body understands what it’s doing, not how much the head has memorised.

So we start underneath the moves, with axis, weight, connection, and what your frame is actually transmitting to the person in front of you. Patterns come after, and by then they’re easy.

Seven stages

You move up when you can do the thing, not when enough weeks have passed.
  1. Foundations. Axis awareness, weight distribution, and the vocabulary your body needs before anything else works.
  2. Vocabulary. Soltinho, Lateral, Viradinha, and rhythm that lives in the body rather than in the counting.
  3. Connection & Flow. Lead and follow as a conversation, and the first work on the Deep Bubble.
  4. Axis & Rotation. Torso mechanics and rotation done safely, which is where most injuries come from.
  5. Navigation. Reading a crowded floor, improvising inside it, and travelling without taking anyone out.
  6. Headwork Essentials. Head mechanics and musicality, which come this late on purpose.
  7. Advanced Headwork. Teaching-level complexity, and the point where you can explain it to someone else.
The order isn't decoration. Rotation on an unstable axis is how people hurt their partners, so Stage 4 comes after Stage 3 and not before it. Safety isn't the boring part that comes before the real material. It is the real material.
